Endangered Species

Ways You Can Help Endangered Species By: Lauren Kurpis

Picture:
This picture shows many different animals that are endangered. If we want these animals to live we need to help them.

Summary:
The article talks about the many different things you can do to save endangered species. This article focuses on seven ways to get involved. One way to help is to conserve habitats which means to protect the homes in which the animals live. The second way to help is to make space, this includes building a bird house and not using chemicals in your garden. You can also help the species by recycling and planting native plants. You can help animals just by not polluting the air and saving water. There are also many organizations you can join whose goals are to help endangered species. A really easy thing you can do is speak up! Get others involved to help the endangered species. The article also goes into ways little kids can help endangered species like writing letters to the government or learning about a specific species and then making a puppet show to tell others.

Opinion/Reflection: I chose this article because I was really curious to learn how to help endangered species. I never would have guessed that recycling would help animals, but it makes sense that helping the environment would help animals because then they will have a safe place to live. I have heard before that certain animals could be extinct by the time we grow up and have children. I can't imagine what it would be like if when I was older, I took my kids to the zoo and they couldn't see a polar bear or a panda bear because they were extinct. I definitely think we need to do our best to save the endangered species.

Questions:
Why is saving endangered species helpful to us?
What would be the effect on our society if endangered species if endangered species do become extinct?
How can we get to a point in time where there are no endangered species?

These are all great ways to save our environment! First, we need to get all humans on the same page, though. Saying we need to do these seven things is one thing, but doing them is another. We can all start in our communities and work from there! I thought the puppet show part was pretty funny and cute, and a great way to get kids involved!

In answering Rachel's question, I think there will never be a point in time where there are no endangered species. We do not even know about most species on Earth. Also, their species are extinct due to something other than human behavior. Humans will always be trying to prevent extinction from the species they know of. And who knows? Maybe in the future people will not care as much about these endangered species.

I really enjoyed reading the summary rachel put together. The topic of endangered species really interests me. Many animals that are endangered really interest me. I always try as hard as I can to help in a small way. I did not know that planting native plants would help the endangered species.

Animals will repopulate if we stop cutting down their homes. In our society we are so caught up in having the biggest, best thing there is. We keep building big houses and complex buildings over an area that is populated with animals. If we cut back on the land we take away from other species we will be another step closer to less endangered animals.

I was very interested in reading this article. Not only is it important to keep species protected from endangerment, but extinction too. I could never imagine what it would be like if many wonderful species ceased to exist, especially if it was due to something that humans contributed to. It surprised me when I realized just how simple helping this cause can be. Just simply making people aware of what's happening can make a colossal difference in the likely-hood of some species' survival. Also, I think it would be really cool for little kids to get more involved in the awareness of this. Not only would it start a protectiveness of endangered species from a young age, but it would provide an appreciation for nature as well.

"Why is saving endangered species helpful to us?"
As we've been learning in class, humans are often dependent upon ecosystems for the continuation of our society. Not only do the appearance of our homes depend upon healthy and abundant wildlife, but the supply of our food does as well. If many endangered species became extinct, entire ecosystems could collapse, leaving humans to find some other source of nutrients.

I'm really glad that Rachel chose this article, because I believe it's really important to focus on saving animals! I definitely an animal lover, and not being able to see animals such as polar bears or pandas later in my life would be tragic. From what I can tell, if we all made a little change, such as recycling harmful plastic that could suffocate an animal, or use a 'greener' car to protect to ozone to prevent global warming, this could drastically affect the amount of animals who are in risk of endangerment or extinction. I also think it's a fantastic idea to make children aware of what the future holds for our fuzzy friends if we don't take the incentive to help them!

"What would be the effect on our society if endangered species do become extinct?
I think that the effect on our society would be lack of knowledge. Having an animal be right there is much more interesting than learning about something that is extinct and gone. We are all part of an ecosystem that has an unseen line that connects us all, which is the circle of life.
